About the Theme - The Roots of Empathy

The documented loss of empathy among our children is certainly reason for grave concern. Is not empathy the attribute that makes us truly human and humane, that nurtures love and compassion, that knits the fabric of civilization together? Parents and teachers are increasingly concerned about the meanness between siblings and class-mates. This loss of empathy can be sensed among adults as well – in the meanness of much of today's music and entertainment, in the perverse reactions to victims on the internet, in the insensitive rhetoric of some of our leading politicians, in the increasing triumph of greed over generosity in our society.

The knee-jerk reactions to this erosion of empathy have proven quite fruitless: attempting to get children to be nice to each other, teaching empathy as a skill or a value, railing against bullying, or punishing mean behaviour. Even well-intended efforts at emotional education and teaching self-regulation in schools are not resulting in the differences that were hoped for.

So what can be done? How can we as parents, teachers and helping professionals reverse this tide? How can we take children who feel like being mean to find their caring concern once again? What are the keys to raising children who reach out with compassion to the wounded and will ultimately become the caring and considerate adults our world needs.

We cannot truly address a problem we do not understand. Empathy, it turns out, is not simply an attribute that can be taught, a value that can be inculcated, or a skill that can be trained. Reinforcing behaviour associated with empathy will actually corrupt its authenticity, turning medicine into poison.

Dr. Neufeld will trace empathy to its roots in attachment, emotion and development. Once we understand what is missing or what has been lost, the challenges for restoring empathy become clear, both in individual cases and well as in our homes and schools.

While the situation is somewhat dire, there is much reason for hope in turning the situation around, both individually and in our communities.  Insight is key however, and that is where we must start.

About the Theme - Becoming the Answers Our Children Need

Thanks to the age of information, we have never had more answers. And thanks to the fact that we now take children more seriously, there have never been more questions regarding the raising and education of children.  At first glance, this would seem to be a positive development – more questions to which we have more answers. Dr. Neufeld is concerned however, that this supposed enlightenment has actually eclipsed a far more salient truth – that adults are meant to BE the ANSWERS to the children in their life. Ironically and perhaps even somewhat tragically, the more obsessed we become with finding answers as to how to parent and teach, the less we actually become the answers to what they are looking for and need. As fewer adults take on this responsibility and fewer children are actually looking to the adults in their life as their answers, parenting and teaching has become more difficult, with our children's well-being and development at risk. This despite having more answers than ever and an army of experts telling parents and teachers what to do.

So how are adults supposed to be the answers to the children they are responsible for? Among other things, Dr. Neufeld will explore how parents and teachers are to be the answer to a child's attachment needs, their need for deep restorative rest, and their need to feel their emotions. He will also explore the responsibility of adults to create and preserve the emotional playgrounds a child needs, especially in the context of the today's digital world. Who we are to a child is far more significant to their development than what we may do or not do in our parenting or teaching.

The purpose of this seminar is to restore adults to their natural intuition and to reverse the erosion of confidence that has resulted in losing our rightful place in our children's lives. Participants will be encouraged to focus less on how to parent and teach and more on allowing Nature to make good use of us as it works to bring each child to their fullest potential.
